Aso Oke The Pride Of The Yoruba Folks

The Famous Aso Oke fabrics materials is About one of the oldest hand made cloth out of africa. According to research , this fabrics is dated back to the 15th centuries and far back as then , Aso Oke was worn by the rich, royals and important people in Yoruba land .

 

Aso-Oke which means ‘cloth from the hinterland is the genre of woven cloth that is peculiar to the Yoruba. It is made from cotton and handwoven. Seed extraction is indigenous done by hand. The cotton seeds are placed on a block of wood and an iron rod is rolled over the seeds.

From then till date, Aso still dominates a good number of cloths worn by the Yoruba people to events such has weddings reception, Traditional Marriage, child dedication, House warming, coronations to mention a few.

Aso oke means “top cloth” in the English language, denoting cloth of high status. Usually woven by men and women, the fabric is used to make men’s gowns, called agbada and hats, called fila, as well as women’s wrappers, called iro and head tie, called gele.

As regards marriage ceremony in Yoruba land, the couple’s sees it a thing of pride to rock the fabrics on the day.
When people speak of an aso oke, they are usually referring to the traditional Yoruba women’s garment, which consists of four parts
Buba: Yoruba blouse

Iro: wrap skirt

Gele: head tie

Iborun or ipele: shawl or shoulder sash

This fabrics arguably remains one of the prestigious fabrics of the Yoruba people as it has remained and adopted as part of the intergral part of the Yoruba Traditional fashion.
